Road Marking Project of 2009

This year the Highways Magazine annual Excellent Awards has a new category for the Road Marking Project of the year.

Sponsored by the Road Marking Association (RSMA) this category reviewed benefits that have accrued a reduction in accidents, or road marking design changes or innovations which has improved traffic movements, reliability of use. and a reduction in accidents.

The winner of this category will be announced at an industry gala dinner in October with a judging panel announcing the winner from a shortlist of two projects. The two shortlisted projects both demonstrate a diversity of situations and results which had developed from a Client and Contractor relationship towards careful design and use of innovative materials and products.

Shortlisted Project 1 submitted by Somerset County Council and supported by Somerset White Lining Project 1 is a road marking solution to a seven mile stretch of the A358 between Taunton and the junction of A303.

The project itself involved improvements in conspicuity of designated right turn lanes to provide safety to right turning vehicles. Off-setting. Carriageway edge lines also gave delineated segregation for cyclists .

Within the design scheme Roadcraft’s road stud type 301 was extensively used providing nighttime enhancement to the highest levels especially in nighttime adverse weather.
